The Sustainability Class Series began in 2010 to explore environmental themes in Education. Here are the classes that are offered through the year.
American Food System – Explores the American Food System, students learn how their food arrives from the farm to their plate.
Science of Gardening – Looks at the Science behind growing food from what nutrients plants need to grow to how good soil is developed.
Description: This class will allow students to gain social justice media tools to affect change in their communities. Students will use such online tools as tumblr, google docs, twitter, etc. Through writing assignments students will critically evaluate themes in education, economics, and personal experiences. The class will culminate in creating a student-led media skills curriculum based on their class experience.
Environmental Studies - Looks at the Global Warming issue and the different Earth systems that are affected.
Green Tech – Examines the current manufacturing business and how they effect the environment and develop suggestions to move them towards sustainability by looking at green technology.
Course Description: This class will analysis the food options in East LA. East LA is a Food Desert, with limited healthy food destinations. With all the fast food available, we are in need of some slow food. Each week we will develop a healthy affordable meal with the ingredients available at our local grocery store. We will learn to cook/shop local, seasonal and healthy.
Projects: Cooking a Healthy Affordable Healthy Lunch every Thursday.
Water: Los Angeles Case Study-
Course Description: Water is key for Human survival. This class will analysis the growth of city of Los Angeles via access to water. We will explore the geological, climate, and culture landscapes of the city. In this we will get clues as to why LA has so much water when it’s a dessert. We will go back in time to when there was a might LA River that has now been cemented, and liberated with new ideas. There will be 3 hands-on projects: Drip System, Rain Water Catchment System and Grey Water System. These projects will show us how we can conserve water in a desert environment in which we sit.
